Collectability Quotient – 2010 NHL Entry Draft – Part Eight

Welcome back as we complete our look at the potential collectability of the hopeful rookies who are entering camps this month. Remember, if they can make their respective teams this season, they’ll receive rookie cards in Upper Deck and Panini products. Otherwise, you’ll need to look for them within In The Game products for another year at Canada Card World.

Emerson Etem (29th Overall – Anaheim Ducks)

A California hometown boy drafted by a California team. It’s just as if Walt Disney was producing the movie himself. He can probably skate circles around most of the players drafted this season but his other skills are less defined. He dropped further than most scouts thought but he can score and he can skate. Can he do it again at the next level? Collectability Quotient (CQ) – B-

Brock Nelson (30th Overall – New York Islanders)

Nelson is a big player who put up massive numbers in the US high school system this season. He scored 53 goals and 95 points in only 31 games. As is always the case with US high-schoolers, did he have much competition? A power forward with good bloodlines (he is Dave Christian’s nephew), Nelson will need to show he can do it against top competition. Many American high schoolers drop off the map when they’re surrounded by good players. But could he play with Tavares in the future? (CQ) – B

Bradley Ross (43rd Overall – Toronto Maple Leafs)

He’s a Maple Leaf, that may be enough. Add in the fact that he’s been compared to Steve Ott and Daniel Carcillo and you know he’ll be a fan favourite in Toronto. If he can delight the fans and put up okay offensive numbers, he’ll be a darling as long as he plays for Toronto. (CQ) – B+

Calvin Pickard (49th Overall – Colorado Avalanche)

He didn’t end up being a first-rounder like his brother Chet but Calvin might not play second-fiddle for long. Many scouts had difficulty choosing between Jack Campbell and Pickard but they both may end up as #1 goaltenders in the NHL. Craig Anderson looks like he may keep the job in Colorado for a while but Calvin should make a good understudy. Collectors love goaltenders. (CQ) – B

Kirill Kabanov (65th Overall – New York Islanders)

The mystery player of the draft. Top five talent but his attitude has almost ruined his reputation. If Kabanov gets his head straightened out and ends up playing with Okposo or Tavares, the results could be shocking. Take a chance on this talent. He may be Sergei Kostitsyn but he just may be the next superstar. Sometimes you take a risk. (CQ) – A-

In the end, who knows? Some of the top picks never turn out. Some of the 7th rounders become stars. It’s never easy determining who will be good at 25 when these kids are only 18. Have fun collecting and good luck!
